Current #5 ranked and Barking Abbey’s Dan Akin has signed with NCAA D1 University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) on a full athletic scholarship for the 2017-18 season.

Akin joined Barking Abbey from Northfleet Tech for the 2016-17 season for a prep year, and instantly became an impact player in the Division 2 Men’s squad, who won the league and playoff title, and the National Championship EABL side.

“I’m extremely grateful that I have been blessed with this amazing opportunity to further my academics and basketball at UMBC,” Akin said.

“I decided to sign there because I believed it was the right school for myself to continue to get better every day as their style of play complements the style which I like to play.

“I’d like to thank everyone at Barking abbey who have been amazing, especially coaches Lloyd Gardner & James Vear. These guys really pushed me every day in practice and individuals to get better.

The same goes to my previous coaches Martin Parry and Rob Newson who supported me a lot.”

“Lastly, my family back home. Never ever would I be here without them and I hope to pay them back in the future.”

Akin averaged 10.3 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1 steal per game in the EABL this season, before picking up the EABL Final MVP for a 28 point, 14 rebound outing against Charnwood.

We want to wish Dan all the success in his future at UMBC.
